Final Rendition Image(s)

To recreate Lauren Withrow's photo, I used my sister as the subject. My mother was on the side using a tool to spray the flour and my sister would throw the glitter into the air. In order to ensure I would get the shot in time, I had to use the continuous shooting mode on my camera. I made sure that the background was dark enough that the flour would show up distinctly. Some shots I took with my sister posing sadly as the original, and some shots I took with her smiling, to make my own version. In the editing process, I first made the image black & white. Then I darkened the background slightly and and took out any leaves in the background that stood out. Finally, I put a very light gray overlay on her shirt as it was too bright.

Artist Worksheet

Photographer's name: Lauren Withrow
Title of Photograph: Untitled

Artist Bio

Education: Lauren is currently a senior in high school. She was recently accepted into college and will most likely major in fine arts or photography. She is planning to attend the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in NYC. She plans to also take some psychology classes on the way, for her intrigue in the way peoples' minds work and what causes them to act the way they do.

Upbringing: She was born and raised for most of her life in Farmersville, a farming town in North East Texas. She lived a pretty average childhood, as she played sports and danced.

Art Experience: Lauren has been photographing for many years. She has already taken some college photography classes to get ahead, but she feels that she learns more from studying other artists. She started with self-portraits outside. She now has studio experience photographing models. She has extensive editing experience in photoshop.

Artistic Background

Did your artist work in other artistic Mediums (paint, clay etc?)
Lauren only works in photography.

Why is he or she a photographer?
She explains her passion for photography in these two quotes: "Photography is woven into each cell of my body, never to be removed.", and, "The greatest joy I have in life is taking pictures and I hope that through my images I can bring a little piece of my passion out into the world.". She began photography because she had to give up sports due to the amount of injuries she aquired. Also, as she was not very social, photography helped her express emotions. It is also a way for her to get people to better understand her and her personality.

What inspires his/her work?
She is inspired by fashion, as well as her personal experiences. She is inspired by the way the body moves, from her previous dance experience. She is also inspired to take photographs by the way that photography is, "the ability to see the world in a different way, to be able to create the impossible, to create a world you had always dreamed of, to be able to capture a moment someone will cherish forever, or to be able to remember the forgotten faces of the world.".

Has your artists encountered any hardships or successes in his or her life that are directly reflected in their work?
Lauren has encountered many many achievements, which is a  great accomplishment for a high school student. She has had multiple features, edititorials, and interviews in magazines. She has been featured on online blogs. She has been featured in galleries as well as a gallery in NYC. She has been the photographer for a photoshoot for the television show Project Runway. And finally, her images have been used for the covers of two different books. These successes are directly reflected in her work.

Why did you select this image?
I selected this image because I like that it has a special effect that was not photoshopped in. To me, the photo is simple, but full of little details, which makes it very interesting.

How would you describe your photographers style? (in your own words)
My photographer's style is very natural. Her photographs usually have earth tones or are black and white. They often has a shallow depth of field, so that the subject is the only thing in focus. Her style quite often requires playing with light, as in the picture above has specks and clouds.

After researching the photographer what have you found most interesting about his/her photographic style or image production?
I found it very interesting that Lauren is so accomplished though she is only the age of my peers. It is interesting that she has been taking professional photographs for a long time, but has only recently began shooting images in a studio, with models, stylists, and assisstants. I also found it interesting that she has the ability to take complex self-portraits without any help.

How are you planning to recreate your photographers image?
I am planning to recreate the image by taking the photo outside, with a dark background. I am planning to make the image black and white, and aiming to create the same special effect while shooting the photograph. I am planning to use a friend as the subject. I will also use flour and glitter to recreate the effect in the photograph, as Lauren did when she shot it.

What images do you anticipate taking to recreate this image? (i.e. describe the shots you intend to take to reach your final goal)
I anticipate my images coming out similar to the original photograph. I will most likely try to recreate it as closely as possible while photographing and edit the photo to look more similar.

Experimental Tutorials

For this picture, I wanted to create an antique, worn and dirtied look. To achieve this I looked for textures that would create that effect. I found free textures that were available for use on flickr. I took two textures and opened them up in photoshop. I put both textures on seperate layers on my photo. Then I selected the blend mode that looked the best for each texture. Finally I adjusted the opacity of each texture. I really like the result. http://www.flickr.com/photos/beapierce/sets/72157601574009156/with/1218705275/

For this picture, I used a Cross-Processing tutorial. First, I added a layer and adjusted the curves. I adjusted the Red, Green and Blue curve. Then I adjusted the blend mode to Color so that the highlights wouldn't be blown out. I added another layer with Solid Color. I chose a yellow-green color and adjusted the opacity of the layer to 5%. For the finishing touch, I found a flim rebate to frame the picture on flickr. I overlayed this on top of the photo. I think the result is very interesting. It's very dramatic, and though I like the look, I proabably wouldn't want to do this for very many photos.

For this picture, I used a watercolor painting tutorial. The first step was to duplicate the background layer three times. Then I added the Cut Out filter to the first layer. I adjusted the blend mode to Luminosity. Then I added the Dry Brush filter to the second later. I adjusted the blend mode to Screen and took the opacity down to 56% so that the details were less blown out. Then I added a Median Blur with a radian value of 12 px to the third layer. Finally, I adjusted the blend mode to Soft Light. I think the end result is very pretty. However, it didn't work as well on my photo because it had much less colors than the landscape photo used in the tutorial.

Blog #2

Aperture - Aperture is in relation to your lens diaphragm. This is inside of your lens. Changing your aperture changes the size of the hole that your lens diaphragm will open. This will affect how much light is let in the camera when you take a photo. A low aperture can give you a picture with your subject focused and your background blurred.  A high aperture can give you a picture where you subject focused and your background is mostly focused as well.

Shutter Speed - Shutter speed refers to the amount of time your shutter remains open while taking a shot. The longer the shutter is open, the more light you let in to your camera. A fast shutter speed such as 1/125 will allow you to take a photo of something in motion without the photo becoming blurry.

On my camera, I hold down the mode button and then turn the command dial until the A shows up on the screen for aperture-priority mode, or the S for shutter-priority mode.

This photo interests me a lot. One of my favorite things about it is the pieces of light, which I think make the photo really beautiful. I love the setting, with the bare trees and the snow. I like how the girl is sitting and her expression, seeming peaceful. I also really love the neutral tones. This photo was found on Flickr. It was taken by Lauren Withrow on January 10, 2010. http://www.flickr.com/photos/laurennicole81/4415819906/

This photo caught my eye mostly because of the beautiful, vivid colors. Once again, I really love the pieces of light. The smaller pieces of light really make the photo interesting. I also like the photo itself, with the trees. I like the way they look and I also like the angle at which the photographer shot them. This photo altogether looks really interesting and beautiful.
